A Rare Update...Food, SICKLES, and Girls!

Finally!!! I wanted to do this update MONTHS ago, but my computer crashed, and I lost tons pictures and stuff...everything was a mess that I didn't wanna deal with...but I'm diggin' out finally.

I got a new ride! A restored 1957 Puch Allstate!

I still need some parts, like a cover to keep my pant leg outta the engine...but it runs and is quite fun to ride...except something's now loose...so I need to take it into the shop next time I have money.

Check out that paint job!

The dude I got it from found it in a dumpster 2 years ago, and restored it with parts scrounged from the Internet.

Glistening in the sun. The White walls are NOS Pirelli's from the early '60s

The speedometer doesn't work, but it smokes my friend's Metro scooter...

Here's me right after riding it for the first time. I later lowered the seat and fixed the mirror.

In with the new, out with the old...I traded away my Hondas to the guy that restored the Puch. Hopefully I have some cash in a couple years, so I can buy the bike he builds from them.

About a month ago, I went to the Speedshifters wheel club's annual summer-end party. I didn't get there 'til late, but I still got some decent Pics of my buddy Cody's AMAZING rides. Here's one of his choppers...

I LOVE his metal flake red '60 Chevy gasser!

It used to be my favorite local hot rod...

...But he's sure topped himself with his new bubble top rod!

HOLY SHIT!!

I wish it was light enough out to get the interior...White fur and clear plastic seats!

Lastly, for Halloween, The Hemingers are gonna perform as one of my all time favorite bands...The Mummies!!!

...and our buddies, No Bails are gonna be Wire!

The GO sounds of H.O.A.!

So, as usual, it's been a loooong time between posts, but this time it's not my fault. This post was held up waiting for an eBay package that took forevvvver to get here. Another future post is gonna be on my biggest purchase since starting HOA, but it's currently being repaired by more skilled hands. There's a hint to what it is in one of my pictures this post.

I've been wanting the Revells "Go sound of the slots" record ever since reading about it in the fantastic "Bubblegum Music is the Naked Truth" book, and I recently scored a copy. It's a Slot car themed surf/drag record mostly penned by the late Gary Usher. You may know Mr. Usher for his work with the Byrds and the Beach Boys. He co-wrote "409", amongst other hits...that's even his car revving up at the beginning of "409". Most of the songs on here sound like a second rate Beach Boys, unsurprisingly...but my favorite song here is actually a faux soul number that reminds me of the Who's cover of "Please, Please, Please". It's also one of the few songs on this record NOT written by Gary Usher...but I bring him up because he'll surface again later in the post. Anyway, hear "My Little Slot Coupe" here.

Also in this picture is a record by a band called The Revengers. I found it at the local Salvation Army, and I can't find ANY info on it. from the label I've gathered that it was a local Coldwater, MI band in the 60's, and it was recorded in the Holland, Michigan area, but that's all I can find. The a side is decently done country-ish rock, but that's not really my bag...Listen to the surf instrumental "Revengers' Theme" here.

Lastly, we have "The Big X-L" by Ougie and the Ougots. I found this randomly in a pile of my dad's albums that he hasn't listened to since the 60's...but he claims he has never seen it, so I assume it belonged to my uncle Christopher, who was killed in Vietnam. All I've been able to find on these guys is one picture online, and I learned that they were from Georgia. Big X-L refers to the Ford Galaxie 500/X-L. Check it out here.

The kid's record player pictured I found real cheap at our local antique mall along with the Lesley Gore record. The record on the turntable is a beat-to-hell copy of J. J. Barnes' "Baby Please Come Back Home"/"Chains of Love". Some of you may know "Chains of Love" from the Dirtbombs' cover of it on "Ultraglide in Black". The green and white Platter Pak is from UHF in Royal Oak, MI, and the monster button is from the vintage clothing store next door. The orange swirl Platter Pak I scored on Ebay, after losing out on many others of the same design. I wish it was in better shape, but whatever...It's still awesome, and it's in use too.

The Humdinger Monster was apparently a 1 quart shake. In my quickie, half-assed research I found some neat Humdinger Monster puppets from '66 and an ad, but nothing saying who made the Humdinger.

Lastly, My newest eBay score...more Gary Usher madness! This JUST arrived on my porch today. I still need the other 2 Mr. Gasser albums...and I REALLY need the Weird-ohs and Silly Surfers LPs...if anyone's holding.

H.O.A. Field Report: The Decline Of The Coldwater Car Show

Hey readers...sorry about the big gaps in between posts...I've been stupidly busy as of late, on top of my natural tenancy to procrastinate. And it might be a few more days from starting this post, until I finish it, because I think I might be coming down with some food poisoning. Great.

I've never missed a day of it, and as a Kid, it was like Christmas to me...I went to the Coldwater Car Show over the weekend, and it was a total bust. maybe only 100 cars...lowest turnout since they started having it in, I think '86. A lot of people were blaming the weather, and that was definitely a big factor, but so was the shitty management of the whole thing. It used to be run by a committee of local hot rodders...my dad was on it the first few years...but eventually, it was taken over by the Chamber of Commerce and a local bank...and every year they inject some more of their "bright" ideas into what used to be the best thing to happen in this town all year. Now it's just a sad shell.

Anyway, I brought my camera, and snapped a few pictures. I have a plea to the traditional hot rodder/rat rodder(God, I hate that term) community. Can you please stop this 20's/30's field car, re-imagined 50's lowrider, bullet-riddled, rust pile stuff?! It was neat the first dozen times I saw it, but now it's just stale and unimaginative(which is quite a feat for a radical custom).

I say this because this...

and this....

...are two different cars, built by two different people, who didn't know each other until this weekend. If you look real hard, you can see my Dodge hiding behind the American flag trash can.

Even though there were only maybe 15 cars in it, the for sale lot still had some decent stuff. This wrecked '64 Triumph caught my eye. How often do you see one of these smashed up like this?

...another angle

...and again.

this '57 Ford pickup would make an excellent Hoarder Of Awesome junk hauler! If only I had a spare 5 Grand. Of course, I'd paint it metal flake lime green, and put Cragar mags on it.

In one of the vendor barns, out of the wind and rain and cold, I found a booth with a guy selling a bunch of bootleg prints. All sorts of cool stuff...lots of biker flick posters, old dragster photos, Munsters press kit photos, Ed Roth ads, Hot Wheels...all sorts of 60's stuff. I bought this nifty Eve print for $6. I'm not wild about the 'love' flower added to the image, but whatever. The guy also had 5 or 6 crates of quite expensive, and quite fantastic, 60's surf and drag records. In middle of the pile, I found a Phantom Surfers record! I never would've thought I'd find that in Coldwater, over an hour from the nearest record store. The label said it was from the mid 60's, and I had to set the seller straight...and, of course, I bought the record once I talked the price down. How could I not, it had covers of "Eaffin' and Surfin'" from the movie 'Rat Phink A Boo Boo' and a song from 'Bikini Beach', my favorite Frankie and Annette beach flick! I talked to the vendor a while, and gave him a crash course in all things Mike Lucas. He was neat looking...like a Mort Todd drawing of creepy Lurch-type cartoon monster guy.

I really dig this Chevy gasser. I like the yellow Plexiglas windows a lot. I'm glad people are starting to bring this style back.

This Chevy truck is about as ugly as you can get, but I kinda like it...I don't know why.

Here's my baby. Okay, technically it's my dad's baby...but it's the first thing I ever drove when I got my license, and I drive it more than he does. He usually takes his '63 Corvette(he bought it in '68!) to shows, and I drive the Dodge. It's a '52 Coronet. I LOVE this car. This is it's bad side, with the missing trim, but like an idiot, I parked behind a trash can, so I couldn't get a good shot of the other side. It was just starting to rain when I took this picture, and about 10 second later, the sky opened up and started dumping buckets of water. I jumped in the car and shut the door, and the drivers side window fell off it's tracks and into the door! So I had to hurry home, getting soaked, with hopes my print and my record were okay in the back seat, and not getting drenched. What a way to end the worst car show ever.

One of the big reasons I've been neglecting my blog is all the art projects I'm in the middle of. I thought some of you might dig what I've been working on, so here's a couple posters I did over the weekend.

I'm DJing at the Nobunny show and I can't wait! My band opened for him last time, but he was really sick, and spent the whole show in his van...he still kicked ass once he hit the stage though. Nobunny is the best!

Keeping with the automotive nature of this post, here's what I came up with for June's Jacuzzi Boys show. I'm glad I FINALLY get to see 'em!

Finally, I went to a show Saturday night in Kalamazoo to see a band from Toronto called the Rocket Reducers. I didn't really know what to expect, but I was blown away! If you like rock n roll in a Teengenerate, Devil Dogs sorta way, GO SEE THEM LIVE!!!!!

Raiding Dad's Stash

Ugggghhh...I wanted to have a nice big post for y'all, but honestly, I'm currently knocked on my ass with one of the worst mega-colds I've ever had. I went through 3 rolls of toilet paper blowing my nose today, and there's no sign of letting up. I've got each nostril plugged with toilet paper as I type this. Charming. Blaggghhh, I hope I can make it to the Andre Williams book reading and show in Detroit on Saturday! Anyway, needless to say, this update has less research, a little less rambling, but my head hurts so bad I couldn't even work on artwork I NEED to get done, today, so fuck it.

In today's post, I bring you some old "Rodding and Re-styling" magazines. These all belonged to my dad when he was a teenager in the early 60s(he turns 65 this week). When he went into the army in '63, they became my uncle Christopher's. When Christopher got killed in Vietnam in '68, they got stored and forgotten about in a closet at my grandmas house(talk about hoarding awesomeness...I still cringe when I think of the things that got shoveled into a dumpster by my folks when she died!). These were unearthed when my grandma died, and given to me. I still love flipping through these things as much as I did when I was 11. There's probably 50 in all. Here's a few favorites...

This killer '34 Ford roadster was built by owner Don Vargo, and the famous Alexander Brothers of Detroit. The Alexander Bros. also built the '32 Ford on the cover of the Beach Boys "Little Deuce Coupe" LP.

This is the most famous car in the bunch...Ed Roth's Beatnik Bandit. Maybe the coolest show car in history. The Beatnik Bandit survives to this day...you can see it at the National Automobile Museum in Reno, Nevada. Look out for more on Ed Roth, and the underground monster hot rod culture he created, in future updates.

This '56 Oldsmobile was, according to the article, built by a 21 year old for $3500...That wouldn't cover the upholstery today.

That red Henry J is UUUUGGGGLLLLLYYYYY! But it was built for only $200!

...I have no idea why this totally bad ass '34 Ford truck wasn't on the cover instead.

I had a blown up version of this cover on my bedroom wall when I was a kid.

This was a '56 Corvette. I kinda like it...but I think given the choice, I might take a stock '56 Corvette instead.

Those Harley fenders look as strange on this '32 Ford Coupe as the googie print upholstered wheel cover does on the '32 Ford roadster.

Speaking of being sick, this '39 Bantam dragster is pretty SICK!....

...But not as sick as this hemi-powered Ford!(and neither is as sick as how I feel!)

Here's more...To cool!

I'll post more car magazines, both more from my dad's 60's stash, and some I've bought over the years, in the future. But now it's time for some cold medicine and bed.
